Metal roof over shingles

Can you put a metal roof over shingles? If not, what steps do I need to take to not have to remove the shingles?

Roof overs are never recommended. Folks do them. I've seen the metal roof over on asphalt shingles advertising on TV and cringe. When you remove the asphalt shingles, you can inspect existing roof deck, repair damage, inspect everything--chimney and vent and valley flashings. Repairs need to be made if problems are found. A metal roof needs a smooth, flat surface. Warped and raised asphalt shingles will not provide this. If roof is not smooth and flat, this will interfere with the locking system of metal panels and void warranty.

Check the warranty of the metal roofing. Read the fine print re: roof overs. Roof overs, although frequently done, are not recommended. Why take a chance with a major investment?
