Painting Corrugated Roof

We have a pergola at our patio and would like to cover it. We were thinking of using corrugated metal roof from HD. The wife wants to paint it and the HD guy said to first clean it with TSP. Has anyone painted galavanized metal and will this method work? I'd rather use TSP than acetone since it's easier on the lungs. Thanks.

IMO it is best to let it weather some but if that's not an option - it must be cleaned first. Metal roofing usually has a thin coat of oil to protect it until it gets sold. I've not used tsp on new glavanized but it should do ok. Check with your local paint store for a primer suitable for galvanized metal.

Sounds like a bear of a job. May I will just put plywoods up there and roll roofing. How thick does the plywood need to be, 1/2"?

1/2" or 5/8" should work fine.

What is the rafter spacing? How much slope?
