How to use ladder on top of garage roof

I need to replace my fascia boards on the gable side of my roof, above the garage. The boards are just out of my reach with a pry bar, so I will need to use a ladder. Since the garage roof is sloped, what can I do so I can use my ladder? My extension ladder is too tall to use for this because it's too tall and would be resting on the wood I need to replace (ladder is 28 or 32 feet extended), so I need to use my 8' step ladder. Can I build a platform for the ladder to rest on like this?

Yes but it would be best to have someone hold the ladder for you...... and you would have to deal with resealing the roof where you attached the platform.

I better option might be to use a walkboard possibly from the roof ridge to an extension ladder rung.

So you're saying this:

1. Extension ladder on the ground level next to the garage
2. Run a plank from a rung on the ladder to the garage roof
3. Have someone hold the ladder at ground level
4. Walk on plank (probably won't need the extra height of a ladder on the plank) to do work to fascia

How thick should the plank be?

Renting an aluminum pic board is best - especially for long spans, otherwise use a 2x12

If possible get someone else [who's insured] to work on a tile roof - it is real easy to damage the tiles. I shy away from those jobs if I can.
