how do i finish shingles on overhang?

I built an overhang to provide shelter from shade/rain that is anchored from my house which is brick. I have shingled almost the entire thing. I put down flashing where the overhang attaches to the house and have shingled up to the flashing. My question is what do I lay down last to cover up the tar strips on the last course of shingles? Since there is no ridge I can't lay the usual ridge pieces. I was considering cutting the top portion of the shingles length wise and laying those but nails would show and there would still be joints where they met. Any suggestions? The flashing I put down was the 7" lengths like you put around skylights. Should I buy roll flashing and lay one continuous piece the length of the overhang? Thanks.

The flashing you used is called a "step" flashing. It's primarily used on each course end. How long of a run do you have where your shingles end? If your shingles meet a brick fassad, then lead is probably the way to go. It need to be cut into a mortar joint, set into it, down two/three courses and then over the top of your shingles. Try looking around at other structures if your having some difficulties. Sometimes seeing a similar application makes the light go on.

the structure is 20 feet long. What do you mean when you say "lead"? Is that a type of flashing? What is a mortar joint? Thanks.

Joints

A mortar joint is the "concrete-looking" stuff between the bricks.

And lead is a type of metal used as flashing. It is very workable. If you have a chimney, take a look......it should have been used on it.
