Question Help roofing back porch

I am putting a new roof on my 12 x 24 back porch and have a few questions.

1. I figured I need 3 squares and maybe 1 bundle of shingles. Is this correct?

2. What is the best way to make sure the transition from the porch to the house does not leak. The roof on the house is only 2 months old and I don't want to cause any problems with it. The original flashing is still there. Do I need to make sure I get all of the old porch shingles out or will it hurt if a few inches are left up under the regular roof shingles?

Thanks for any advice.

Plan on getting under the existing roof about 18" to get a proper joint.
