sealing a crack in my basement wall

I have a crack in my basement wall that is not very far down from ground level that is beginning to leak. I was planing on digging down and patching the crack from the outside. Can anyone suggest a good waterproofing material I could use that will be effective at sealing the crack and will last a long time?

There is a membrane that comes on a roll. It's sold at building supply houses. It will last forever.

You probably do not have a proper drain tile system (exterior or interior) to remove the water from around the basement.

Is your exterior drainage correct and have long extensions (above or below ground) to carry the water away?

Patching or sealing an existing crack with something is just a band-aid and is not correcting the long term cause.

The membrane I recommended is not a band-aid. Of course, the ground has to be pitched right on the backfill & the gutter system has to be in place too.

I don't have a drainage system in the basement and I'm not sure if there is one around the outside of the house. I do have the downspouts on the gutters leading 15' from the house. The ground needs to be picthed away from the house, but I'll do that after I dig. I tried to patch it from the inside. I used hydraulic cement then covered it with a watherproofing tar but when it rains heavy it still leaks.
