Old cistern under living room

We recently discovered there is an old cistern under our living room. It is empty with just trash in it. My concern is that this thing may collapse taking part of my house with it!! Has anyone ever had this problem and does anyone know if these things tend to collapse after time?? Thanks for any help with this!

Can you post some pics to photobucket.com? Why would it collapse & even if it did, why would it take your house with it?

Cistern

Sorry no pix, its under the house in the crawl space. Reason I'm worried about it is part of it is under our carport and other part is under our living room and we've noticed part of the carport is sinking in. I'm just thinking if walls of this thing were to collapse my carport and living room will sink into the hole it leaves. It was never filled with anything so its just a big empty container under the house.

Is there any way to build temporary supports under there? If not, the only other answer I can see is to go down through the carport.
