Converting flat roof to Pitched metal roof
Hello everyone,
My house has a flat roof and I hate it, and for many reasons it is going to be replaced by a pitched metal roof. I have put on several metal roofs in Florida with little excitement and event so I'm planning on doing the same here.
To he house has a concrete basement and wooden single story on top of the basement. current flat roof is on it's way out. My plans were to measure the existing roof and go to our local truss company to design the new roof structure and build it.
then remove all the old flashing, gutters.....bolt the new roof structure to the trusses.
Then the easy part the roof.
Here's a question. The house is only one story with a concreate basement. Should I have a structural engineer asses the structure and make the plans.

Here in Chicago an architect would be required to submit a plan with the city for a permit to replace the roof. My observation is that if you are not in an area where a permit is required, roof trusses are an engineered item and made to fit the need of the structure. They also cannot be cut or modified without engineering certification. Someone has to design them... An architect would probably cost less than a structural engineer for that. I call for a structural engineer when the existing structure has been compromised- Mark
