Roofing question

I have started on getting quotes for a new roof on a 42x22 foot basic ranch with a 13x15 foot addition.
One price was $10800,and another was $6500.

Both quotes were for the 30 yr.architectural shingles, ice and water shield, etc.

One contractor said he could do the job in one day with a 6 man crew, the other said 4 days with a 4 man crew.

The discrepancy between the two concerns me somewhat. Thats what i'm asking here for some opinions.

Thanks

There is no way a house that small should take 4 days, but regardless of what they told you for manpower, the bottom line is the cost per sq. ft. The higher bid is a bit outrageous, IMO. I'd call the lower bid competitive. Hopefully that price includes tear off and dump fees, otherwise both bids are high. Were they both bidding exactly the same thing?

Your $10,000 bid is way two high, even with 6 guys. I ran some preliminary numbers. Your $6500 bid is very near to be correct. I would say about 3 days for the job. There are always things in roofing that come up that you don't count on that take time. Your $6500 bid is probably just being causious as far as time goes. Good Luck

XSleeper and Jack the Contractor,

Many thanks for your inputs. I thought the higher quote was rather high, but didn't know if the lower quote was just a
"teaser" quote... Both jobs were spec.'d out the same.

Both quotes included stripping,and disposal

Correction: My home has two layers of shingles, the lower of the two quotes was for stripping a single layer,$6500. What can i expect to pay
for stripping another layer?

I'm not a roofer but it doesn't seem to me that it would be feasible to just strip off one layer of shingles. I would think that you'd rip it all off together. Maybe a little more labor but probably double the disposal fee.

No.i'm not just stripping off one layer. Both layers to be removed.

One quote, $10800,was for both layers. The other was for a single layer that i neglected to tell the $6500 guy that there was 2 layers.
I was interested in how much more a extra layer would add to the roofing job.

They will have to tear off both layers. Usually they only charge about $20 to $25 a square for the second layer unless the lower layer is shakes or wood shingles. I would not lose any sleep over the price. Good Luck
