Roof questions to ask

I'm in the market for a new roof, and would appreciate help on the correct questions to ask & things to specify in the contract. I've seen comments about 'step' and 'counter' chimney flashing, and "style D drip edge". Is that standard for a roof, or do I need to specify details like that?

Also, is it silly to specify that shingles be attached with nails instead of staples?

Finally, does the wind warranty really matter that much? Is it worth paying for a 80 or 100mph warranty instead of the usualy 60mph?

I can say that the placement of the nails on the shingles has alot to do with whether or not they will hold up to their wind rating, whatever that may be. I don't know that much about it myself, I'm in the same boat as you, since I'm preparing for the same improvement. But shingles have a specific area within which the nails are supposed to be placed. It's not just the shingle itself. It also has to do with installation.
