How to Connect Upper Gutter Downspout to Lower Gutter?

Hello all - last year we had GutterGuard installed on our gutters, and for the most part it works very well. However, in any areas where an upper gutter downspout feeds a lower gutter, it tends to spill over during heavier rains (the diverter plates installed do not seem capable of distributing the excess flow).

I would like to just connect the upper downspout to the lower gutter - but I am not sure how best to approach it. Here is a pic of an example. I am assuming the GutterGuard would have to be cut so it could accept the feed from the upper downspout...?

Was at Lowe's over the weekend, but couldn't find the necessary gutter pieces to make this work.

Any suggestions/guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

You just need an "a" elbow and a "b" elbow, along with a section of downspout. It would also be helpful if you could do a little adjustment on that piece of downspout you can see, and try to get it to be closer to level. The angle it is sitting at will make it tough on you otherwise. You might need to remove and replace the vertical downspout around the corner with a longer one, so that once it elbows, the horizontal downspout extension will be tighter to the roof, and more level. Then turning the corner will be easier, since the pieces you need to add on will also lay flatter with the roof.

Thanks for the reply xsleeper - how should I make the connection to the GutterGuard? Just cut a hole in it to accommodate the connecting elbow?

Glad to help! Yes, that would be the best way. Your final elbow will insert into the hole you make. You can make a hole that fits the elbow nice and tight so that it won't blow around...

or if you want to get fancy, score the gutter guard with a sharp utility knife, in the shape of a sideways H. If you score it enough, it will break through the aluminum. It will create 2 tabs that you can fold upward, trim them a little shorter with a tin snips, and put a 1/4" hex head zip screw though each tab into your elbow to hold it in place.
