Best and safest way to clean shingles?

I tried searching using Google but received mostly advertising pages.
Bleach would be my first choice but I heard it is very damaging to tile.

Basically I want to remove the black slimy build up on the shingles in a manner that works yet isn't damaging to the shingles.

Any recommendations?

I would think a bleach/water solution would be ok although you do want to rinse it off before it can dry. It's difficult to wash shingles without damaging them. Bleach water and a pressure washer will clean the shingles up quick but it will cut the life of the shingles in half!!! It's best to spray the bleach solution on with a pump up garden sprayer and rinse it off with a garden hose. Working it in with an old broom will also help but again care must be used so you don't damage the shingles.
