Lichen growing on roof

Dear Sirs,
I live in a fairly wooded area surrounding the house. The north side of the house is now growing lichen in patches on the roof. The roof is regular three tab asphalt. There are three good size patches up there but it seems that it wants to do a complete takeover. I'm told that bleach will damage the roof. How about Roundup? Some of the oldtimers even suggested zinc but where do you get this material? Are there any souls out there that have run across this problem and what was your solution. Thanks JoeA

I saw an Ask This Old House episode a few years back where Tommy Silva installed zinc strips on a shingled garage roof to solve the problem you describe.

I found this in the ATOH archives Mossy roof

Here is one source although I'm sure you can get it through a big box. I know they carry sheet copper.

Where did this "bleach will damage the roof" thing come from? I've never heard that a dilute solution will hurt anything. Not sure how it would affect lichens...but is commonly used for moss and mildew. I think it's the fact that people then scrub with a stiff brush...that will damage shingles.

You can get the zinc strips at almost any roofing supplier I would imagine....I've even seen them carried at some HD stores in certain areas.

Just search for "anti mildew zink roof"...worked for me.
