roof jack installation
#1
What is the best way to install a range exhaust fan cap (8" duct) on an existing, moderately pitched, composition shingled roof? I have read suggestions to completely remove all the shingles under the roof jack flange, roof cement the flange to the roof paper, and reshingle over the flange, top and bottom. I have also read to simply leave the shingles in place, cut the duct hole, roof cement the lower portion of the flange on top of the lower shingles, and tuck the upper portion of the flange under the upper shingles and cement in place. The second method sounds like less work, but is one method superior to the other? Thanks.

Leave you shingles in place. Just cut your hole, slide in your vent and the top flange sildes under the upper shingles, and the lower flange stays on top of the lower shingles. Nail down, and caulk well with neopreme blackjack. Make sure you use the neopreme. Will take about 45 minutes. Don't fall off the roof.
