Cool Roof Mildew Build-Up and Discoloration

Hey Team:

Probably not the first time this has come up but I searched DIY and couldn't find any suggestions.

My roof on a classic split-level home has a mildew buildup on both the lower and upper roof. It is mostly located, and understandably, on the NORTH side front of the house. Very unsightly! I have reached the age that says not to crawl on roofs any longer and therefore need a craftsman to do this job.

Q.1 What is the name of a product that can treat and remove the mildew.
Q. 2 Is this type of job typically performed by a Painting or Roofing craftsman.
Q. 3 I hear that you can place ZINC STRIPS at the top of the ridge by either nailing or cementing the strips in place. Our upper roof is of GABLE design and therefor comes to a 'peak'. Where would you place the strips on the upper roof to gain good coverage??

Thanks for the help Team.

#1 - A mixture of bleach and water is the most common cleaning agent for mildew. The problem with cleaning roof shingles is any scrubbing action or use of a pressure washer will shorten the life of the roof.

#2 - A painter or roofer might do the job if he's short on work, a handyman would probably be a better choice.

#3 - I've heard about the zinc strips but don't know much about them

I'm sure there will be more posts to come to give you better insight.

Yep Zinc strips.
Apply along the top .Do you have a ridge vent ? If not you should and now would be a good time to do it.Remove the "cap" at the peak.Remove 2" of sheathing from both sides.Nail zinc strips down and leave as much sticking out as you can.Bend it it so it lays flat against roof.Install roll ridge vent and new cap.The rain will flow over the zinc and down your whole roof.
Done by a roofer...find one around new house construction
Clean with a sprayer and bleach.Same as deck cleaning..
