Temporary fix for leaking valley of asphalt shingle roof

Hello! I have an asphalt shingle roof that is leaking from somewhere along a valley (or so I suspect). I have plans to re-roof the house this fall or next spring, so I'm seeking a simple, affordable, temporary fix. Is it possible to coat the top of the shingles in the valley with a substance such as tar, and have a desirable effect?

For a short term fix, yes, tar will work. But not simply covering the top of the shingles. You need to work it into any cracks or tears along the way and try not to create any dams that would stop the free flow of water. Get the type tar that can be used in wet conditions so it can be applied to wet or dry shingles without worry.

Galvanized Gutters

I need to replace 60ft fascia gutters and am thinking I could do the Home Depot galvanized in 20 foot lengths...BUT I'm wondering about the joints. What was used back in the day to solder the joints? Acid flux solder? Yeah I know all about the seamless stuff available but I still prefer the old school stuff. Thanks for any input.

Soffit on large porch

I have a porch that has a 6' overhang and I would like to put soffit under it, however I would like the soffit to go up along the rafter, so that it is going from the front of the house to the end of the roof (fascia), this is my 6' length. The area is roughly 6' wide x 18' long. How do I do this? I know that I can install the soffit on one end with F channel and then J channel on the other end but how to I support the total 6' length of the soffit? Do I use furring/nailing strip and then put a nail into the soffit for support? See pic for clarification. [IMG]http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb195/homer2210/Soffit.jpg[/IMG]
