roofing installation question

I am re-shingling a section of and need to know if i should nail down a section on the black tarred "line" ,or above it.

My problem is when i started to lay down the new shingle, the shingle hit a nail on the previous shingle above it that was nailed down on the black tarred line.

Hope my description is not confusing.

Thanks

The instructions on your package of shingles should say exactly where to nail. Depending on the exposure (the width of shingle that is exposed to the elements), your nails will generally be covered by 1/2-3/4" of shingle. If you nail lower, you risk exposed nails. If you nail higher, your nails do not have as much power to hold down the shingle in a high wind. On shingles with tar strips down the center of the shingle, this placement is usually just below, or on the bottom edge of the tar.
