How much snow

How much snow, is to much on a roof. We are suppose to get a lot this winter, and I was wondering when to get the rake out. I have a 4-12 pitch, 19 3/4 on center ruff cut 2X6, 5/8 by 6" pine sheeven, and 2 layers of asphalt shingle.

Good question. Congratulations on being the first to ask it this year! I'm sure we will be hearing this question a lot more this winter! :-/ Keep in mind that not all snow is saturated... wet snow is obviously heavier than dry snow... and if you have ice, well that's bad too. Also remember that improper removal can often lead to more damage to the shingles than the snow might cause on its own.

Here's a good pdf link for you: http://building.cdaid.org/images/Han...oof%20Snow.pdf

As well as a map for your area, since you didn't say what part of NY you are in: http://www.co.warren.ny.us/gis/pdf/SnowLoads.pdf

2x6 on 19.2" centers is not particularly strong... maybe someone else can run the numbers if you can give an idea of the size of the floor plan and type of roof. (hip? gable?)

Your sheathing is probably more like 3/4 or 7/8 thick. Is it really 5/8?
