Water on ends of roofing nails and damp roof around chimney

Greetings -

I have read an earlier thread in which water on the end/tips of nails (not any dampness or "bulls eye" observed on adjacent wood area) may be condensation build up in the attic.

Would this same sort of dampness also concentrate in the far end of the roof, where the chimney is at one end (peak side) and the attic fan is at the other? I've noticed some dampness in the attic on the far sides of the house, and underneath are the two upstairs bathrooms. Even with new exhaust fans installed, the rooms tend to remain quite steamy after running the shower.

Many thanks for any suggestions

Hopefully your exhaust fans are properly vented to the exterior of the roof or outside walls and not into the attic.

You should also have proper venting to the roof/attic itself consisting of gable/soffet/ridge and/or other vents cut into the roof surface itself. This allows for proper air-flow in the attic, reducing moisture/condensation and extending shingle life.

After showers, exhaust fans should be left on for an additional 20 minutes or so to remove that excess moisture. They make a special switch specifically for this with an adjustable delayed off.

As rgedye mentioned, review your attic venting, plus look for air leaks from house to attic. Leaking air is the number one cause of moisture issues up there.
