Flashing a Valley

I have a tin shingled roof on an 1885 Queen Anne that is leaking at a valley on the porch. I have replaced all the rotten wood and layered with felt. How do I correctly flash in the valley when I reinstall the shingles?

Faulk:

I suggest you try to put ice and water barrier in the valley before you replace with tin or copper.
The ice and water barrier is a membrane of tar and fiberglass,sticky on one side,sticky side to the roof.
Measure from top of valley to bottom and add 1 foot.

Roof Wet on One Side, Dry on Other Side

Hoping someone will be able to provide info on what would cause one entire side of roof (north-facing) to have wet wood underneath with other entire side (south-facing) having normal (dry) wood. It's a small house, each roof side being only 36' wide and 16' from gutter-level to top of roof. There has been no leaking water into house below, but there is too much dampness on the wet side for comfort. Thank You!!! for any ideas on how to best correct this problem. I think rain may come in during gusts at very top part of roof, but roof looks good with only 2 - 3 exceptions, which I have repaired. I think it'll take a couple weeks of 90+ temps to dry the wood on damp side of roof....... Again, many thanks for your help.Read More

flat roof

Hi. I just bought a 40 year old house with a flat roof. Inside, the ceilings are the beams and tongue and groove. I have a couple questions. How do I find out if there is any insulation in the roof or room to blow some in? It doesn't look like there is any room for any. I was told by a friend that it would be better to try to have a tapered insulation board installed on the roof and then have some sort of roofing put over that, as opposed to putting in ceilings and insulation on the inside (and then I'd have to cover up the beams and tongue and groove which looks nice.) They said that would be more effective for the long haul against leaking. The roof had some major repairs last year, but i don't know if the majority of the roof is 40 years old or what. The tenents said it hasn't leaked at all since they pulled out a rather large skylight last year and replaced it with wood. I guess I need a roofer.Read More
