I have a Dutch Colonial shingle roof, which has developed black streaks (mildew?). What caused this? Can I cover or get rid of them? How do I avoid it from happening again?

Mildew, mold and most are little plants which grow where conditions are just right. Your roof is probably steep, but washing it with liquid soap cut with 1/3 water will do the trick..Also they sell copper strips that are attached to your ridge and when it rains the copper runs down you roof and kills the mildew. Highly effective.
