My house was damaged by a rain storm. There is a large brown spot in the ceiling. My contractor says he will paint it and seal it. I question whether this is an appropriate method. Shouldn't the ceiling be changed?

Cool

If the sheetrock is still solid, and especially if this was a one-time leak spot, sealing it with something like KILZ (or any good sander-primer-sealer) and painting it should be just fine.
You'll probably have to repaint the whole ceiling to get it all to match, unless the ceiling has been recently painted before the leak.
Good Luck!

A bigger concern would be the insulation in the attic above this part of the ceiling. If you got enough water to make a spot on the ceiling, it ruined the insulation above the sheetrock. And how large is this "large brown spot"? If it's more than about 6" or 8" in diameter, I'ld be holding out for some new 'rock. YOU are paying the bill, and YOU have to live with it -- NOT the contractor!!
