price difference -- cedar shake vs. asphalt?

I'm getting ready to do a 2-story 18X18' addition to my house with a gable roof, and was keen to use cedar shingles. I've used them in the past, doing a shed roof off the rear of the house, and also for a small saltbox shed in the yard. but its been a while and this is much more substantial. whats the price differential since I expect I'll be paying someone vs. doing this time. I hate to switch to asphalt for this since the other gables on the house/property are cedar and it would tie it all together nicely. thx jp

Labor and material prices vary from place to place. Best thing to do is get some bids from contractors since you do not plan to DIY it.

Is your house also ceder shake?

Cedar is expensive and maintenance intensive unless you like the weathered grey color. Personally, I would never use it but if you have other buildings with it, you might want to stick with it for uniformity.

Leave it up to me and I probably would opt for fiber cement.

Ugh, thanks Tolyn. I was apparently a little tired yesterday and missed this being a roof - I saw cedar shakes and inferred siding
