Gable vent with no access to attic

I need to replace a gable vent, squirrel, damage. I have no access to the vent from the attic. What is the best way to replace it from the outside? Caulk it?

We would love to help but can't see your house from here to know what kind of siding you have, what the vent looks like or how it's broken. Is there any way you can post a picture? Or tell us what kind of siding you have, or what the gable vent looks like? Is it Aluminum? White vinyl?

Attic

Sounds like a good time to open up a new attic access.

Brick siding and yes, they built a bonus room that cut off all access to that part. The gable vent is vinyl but I'm thinking of using wood.

So if the bonus room has an a closet cut a hatch there other wise from the accessible part of the attic cut an access to the new part.
