There are random loud popping noises coming from the ceiling. this occurs throughout the year when the heater is on or off. does anyone have any ideas on what is going on?

Its expansion and contraction, likely the trusses expanding and contracting. If your ductwork is in the ceiling, that could be an option too, but it's more than likely the framing which expands when the sun warms up the attic in the morning, then cools overnight and shrinks again.

Not likely. It's usually more of an annoyance than anything.

Does it seem to do it regularly... like at a certain time each day.... same basic time each morning or at night? If you haven't noticed, start taking notes to see if there is a pattern. Usually if it's expansion and contraction it will be pretty predictable.

Doubtful. The only thing one could do is camp out up in the attic and try and locate the source of the sounds. Generally if it is trusses, the noises come from framers who have nailed interior walls to the bottoms of the trusses. With expansion and contraction, the trusses will pop and slide on these nails which makes a terrible popping and/or creaking sound as the contractions usually goes in jumps and starts.

Problem is that you'd practically have to remove all the attic insulation to do find and work on this sort of thing. It would be a real nightmare.

If they framed correctly and used truss clips, then the problem may not be as difficult to fix... and it may just be a few of the clips that are making the noise, maybe from being nailed too tightly, or maybe they just need to be removed and reinstalled now that the framing has dried out and things have settled. Hard to say.
