You multiply the lenght by the width. Then if you divide by 100, it will give you how many squares of shingles you need.
Add 1 square for the ridge, and add 15% for waste.

O.K. time to display my abysmal ignorance. Lets say I have a roof that's 10' by 10'. I multiply 10x10 and get 100'. Now if I divide that by 100 I get 1. What am I doing wrong?

You did it right. a 10' X 10' roof would take 1 square of shingles plus whatever is needed for the roof line and waste. A square of shingles covers 100 square feet.
