Roof materials for flat roof

I am hoping to build an overhang over my deck this summer. The problem is that the pitch of the roof cannot be too steep or it will cover the windows too much. I will have approx. 8 feet of run and 8 inches of rise, meaning a 12:1 pitch right? I seem to remember that asphalt is out of the question, does anyone have any other cost-effective ideas?

I would put metal on that roof. Do it right and it will never leak. Easy to do, and not expensive.
