Question about connecting elbows the downspouts

Hi,
I am a first time home buyer and very new when it comes to fixing anything around the house. We replaced the elbows that connect to the bottom of our downspouts last spring. They have been leaking ever since. We have finally come to the realization that we installed them wrong. We forced the elbow to go up inside the downspout instead of making the downspout fit down into the elbow. This may sound like a silly question but how do we install the elbows? There is a small opening and a larger opening on the elbow...which side fits up over the downspout and which side is supposed to face towards the ground? Please help!

Thank you!

Larger opening goes AROUND the bottom of the downspout, not inside. Sometimes need to kinda flatten out the crimps to it can slide over. Secure with stainless steel or aluminum screws.
