Shingle size

I have 3-tab asphalt shingles on my house. I need to remove at least 2 vertical rows along a roof-wall intersection where I need to replace the flashing because I'm replacing siding. I have some leftover shingles that I think are from the original roofing and they measure about 27 x 13-1/4 - so I'm assuming the shingles I'll be removing will be this size. All the shingles at Lowes are about 40 x 13-1/4. I found a pretty good match for color. Will I be able to use the 40" guys for the replacement rows? This is a 2-3 year temporary fix until I can afford to replace the roof.

It sounds like the ones you have that are about 27" are probably partial shingles...2 out of 3 tabs... and metric. If that's the case, then yes, the ones at Lowes sound like the same size. They are 39 3/4" long or somewhere thereabouts. Each tab measures roughly 13 1/4 x 13 1/4. Three tabs, take that times 3.

OK my apologies. They are dimensional (laminated or architectural) shingles.

Same question applies - is there a short (27") vs a long (40") version? Do I need one vs. the other?

Not that I know of. Like I said, you probably have some partial shingles- full shingles that were cut, and someone intended to use them to start the course up a gable end. Maybe they cut too many.
