Hail damage. need advice about insurance, adjusters and contractor selection.

Hello everyone. I live in Denver CO. We received some pretty bad hail damage. Many people in my area had signs in their front yard forroofing/siding companies. I decided to call one of them to get them to check out my roof. They came out and circled a ton of spots on the roof that had damage. They also pointed out chunks missing from my siding, fence damaged, grill beat up, AC unit damaged and a couple other things.

Now they are asking that I call my insurance adjuster out and then call them so they can be on site with the insurance company so they can help point out damage. They also requested that I sign 2 things for them. One was giving permission to talk to my insurance. The other was saying that if they work with my insurance I will guarantee that I will let them do the work.

Now I did sign the paper saying they could talk to my insurance but not the one that says I must go with them.

They did offer $500 cash to put a sign in my yard to help with the $1000 deductible.

My questions to you guys.... Should I have them here (or another roofing company) when my adjuster is here looking over my property?

Should I not have signed the paper saying they can call/talk to my insurance? if not, what ramifications am I facing? Should I find a new company?

Let me know what would be the best way to go about this.

Thank you for your input everyone!

I can understand them wanting the paperwork. Why would they come out a second time on their dime w/o any guarantee of getting the job?

Is the company licensed, bonded, and insured? Did you check any of their work or talk to someone who worked with them?

I probably would have called my adjuster first. If additional damage was found by a company after the adjuster was there, he'll come back and approve it.

I understand them wanting paperwork and don't blame them at all. They just made me feel very uncomfortable.

I think I will have the adjuster come out and look around without anyone here. Then I will get bids for the work. Does this seem reasonable?

That's what I would do. As Vic said, if more work becomes apparent, the adjuster can come back and authorize it. Be sure to check references before hiring any contractor!
