Gutter flange/Rivets and Crimping questions

Im looking to cut a hole for flange for a new downspout. Should I use rivets or screws? I have never used a rivet before, will I be able to do so with the cutter attached to the house and what type/size rivet gun and rivets do I need?

Also for crimping, When you connect the B-Elbow to straight gutter, do I have to crimp the straight gutter? Can I get away without a crimper?

You should be able to buy a section with the downspout hole already cut. I would use exterior zip screws.

If you decide you don't want to buy the complete piece and you still want to cut your gutter then you can pop rivet the fitting in from the top. I'd use a 1/8" x 1/8" or 1/8" x 1/4" all aluminum rivet. If you look around you can even find white ones like in the picture. The gun and the rivets should be less than $20.

I attached the outlet to the gutter with the rivets from the top (inside) of the gutter. That worked well. However, lapse of clear thinking I used the matching sheet metal screws I bought for the color of the gutter to attach the first elbow to the outlet. I put one on the front and on each side of the elbow into the outlet. Now there are screws tips sticking out into the outlet. I fear that wasn't correct as that probably will act as a catch for debris..... what do you think?

Also I used the same screws to attach the pieces and even the band that holds it to the house. When I was hose testing I was getting some leakage from the screws that attach the band to the side of the downspout. I unscrewed them and added a dab of silicon on each screw hole before reapplying.

You can always put in a shorter screw, you think it might be a problem. I have some 1/4" long screws that I use for that.

You could use rivets in place of the screws. Since they are aluminum they drill out very easily.

Not anymore I cant since the sheet metal screw holes are larger than the rivets. If it becomes an issue, I suppose I would have to replace the whole downspout.

Is it not standard to use screws at the outlet attached to elbow?

You can get larger diameter rivets to fit the holes, and you don't need to screw the bands to the downspouts just get them tight at the attaching point of the house they will hold just fine.
