Can someone tell what type of sealant this is?

I'm at a loss to understand what this sealant is. It is between the roof and rooftop door. I need to replace it as it is cracking, not to mention I tore some of it out already.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like a poorly applied polyurethane caulk or sealant.

You say this is at a door?? You walk out onto asphalt shingles? Odd. I agree with Vic...very poorly and sloppily applied poly. Don't know your options on getting it up except scraping it, and you may tear asphalt up in the process.

I don't think that's shingles. Looks like some sort of rolled roofing maybe with a patch piece under the caulk?

I was thinking it's butyl caulking. I'd only remove what comes off easily. When you are done you might dab some black paint over the sloppy caulk to help disguise it.

Thanks for the tips. I've removed what comes off easily and was going to apply either Dynaflex 230 or OSI quad advanced sealant (external use only and cleans up with mineral spirits). Any reason to use one or the other?

For some background - this is I'm Chicago and one side of the roof is a deck and this side is unfinished. The door you see is the emergency escape (metal stairs / cinder block access way).

The roofing is some kind of asphalt. A contractor came out and said the material is not recommended and he usually uses the smooth asphalt roofing material instead since it seals better.

The OSI would be a better choice. I like the Dynaflex for things like trim, windows, sealing screws or whatever, but not for this application.

Perfect - that's what I used and it looks great! Just waiting for it to fully cure. Now if I can just fix the adjacent door I will be set - I had to pull of the trim moulding off.

Thanks for all the help!
