Hi guys, new to forum and house construction... building a 16" x 54" addition to my house. Its all excavated (I have a basement house) including around the existing house to redo the drain tile and waterproofing. Below ground I will be doing surface prep, waterproofing, roxul drain board and then filter fabric/protection board as needed. How do I prep my existing foundation for waterproofing? There are some spalls, holes, and a couple hairline cracks. I very well may get a contractor to do the work but if I can get things moving I will. How "smooth" does the surface have to be? My existing foundation is not smooth at all... and the surface at the top of the footing is very uneven and inconsistent. the foundation on my addition will be much better naturally! Where do I even start? How dry does the surface have to be to apply a waterproofing membrane? We are at the start of rainy season here in Surrey, British Columbia - should I attach poly to my siding and cover the foundation until I get to the waterproofing? I like the Bakor/Henry line of products or I might get the Tremco Tuf-n-dri done by a contractor. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi all. My (very low pitch) porch roof caved in last weekend and I finally got the old roof ripped off, the joists reinforced and a new plywood roof on. Somewhere along the way a roofer came over and suggested I get something called Flintlastic by Certainteed, which I did, along with it's accompanying nail base. Now, however, I'm questioning whether I want to put it on, and whether maybe I should put a metal roof on. On reason, is I think I'd prefer the look (and sound?) of the metal. The other is that I've been looking over the installation videos for Flintlastic, and there are some minutiae to the process that I don't fully understand. (I'm pretty much a novice to this whole DIY business.) For one thing, they say to let the nail base droop over the side of the roof and nail it into the side fascia. The problem here being that I don't have fascia on the side, just aluminum siding. Should I just nail it to the 2x6 joist? Through the siding? Rip out the siding? And then there were some other things in the videos I was confused by, mostly involving flashing. So, I guess my questions are, does anyone know anything about installing Flintlastic, and have any advice for how I should proceed, especially with regard to the sides and flashing. And second, if I do the metal instead, what order do I put down the following: flashing, felt paper, metal roof? And finally, can anyone think of a third route I could take at this point? Thanks!
