Ridge vent
The previous owners had a new rood put on prior to me buying the house and the contractors installed a soft mesh type ridge vent. In Michigan, we have a lot of squirrels and this stuff is no match for them, who now invade my attic spaces. I'm looking for ways to fix it. I'm considering wire mesh on the inside of the attic covering the vent space, but I'm not sure if this is OK? Will it significantly restrict airflow? Should I just bite the bullet and replace the ridge vent with metal or hard plastic? Should I get rid of it altogether and install more slant backs?

While your wire mesh on the inside will keep the squirrels out they will still chew through the vent and shingles before they find out they can't go any further. At that point the roof is damaged and may leak. I would replace the ridge vent with metal. Squirrels can chew through plastic so I would not bother with plastic.

The squirrels around here will chew on metal as well - they've taken out a lot of the fence ties on my chain link fence - so trying to eliminate some of the squirrels might be worth considering.
