I just got a quote for $6000 to do a 1000 SF tear-off and shingle with Lowe's stock dimensional asphalt shingles. Price includes complete deck cover with rain & snow shield, new drip edge and ridge vent. Roof is small but complicated as there are 2 additions that are reverse gabled--so there are many valleys/lots of waste.
Is there a rule of thumb price these days? Last year I had my 24X46 pole barn done for about $3500 as I recall. And that also included new aluminum fascia trim. :-/

It's slightly more complicated than that. The quote is from the builder of my garage. Can't really get a competitive quote until after the garage is done--and it's getting late in the season. I'm an out-of-towner and anyone I send over while the builder is there will probably be one of his buddies anyways (small community/not much choice).
I really wanted a "close enough" number from this guy so I could have him stay with it and do the roof, trim and gutters. His quote seems very high to me but I only have MY experience to judge by--that's why I ask the experts here.
Isn't there some ballpark contractors use to estimate the price for a roof? I recall something about "~$3.00 per square foot" if using standard-grade materials. The only other roof I've done in the past 20 years fit that estimate.

Pictures would help.
Is that 1,000 ft² the actual roof deck or the footprint of the house?
Grace Ice and water shield is expensive. A lot of cutting adds to the time and cost.
Being new construction there isn't the cost of removing and disposing of old materials and being he is already on the job I would think he could bid a little lower. If he is building the garage, why wasn't the roofing already included, or did you just notice the itemized price?

No two contractors will have the same number and anybody on here who tries to tell you whether your number is reasonable based on the information you've provided is full of it.
The way a roofer or any other contractor prices their work is they figure their cost of materials, add in the cost of their labor, and then add in as much profit as they think their local market will allow them on the job. It will be different for everybody.
You can't know until someone looks at the roof in person and writes it up.
