How to fasten metal mesh to drain grate?

Hello all,

Spee-D Channel 2 ft. Plastic Drain Grate
NDS Spee-D Channel 2 ft. Plastic Drain Grate-241-1 - The Home Depot

6 in. x 36 in. Hinged Gutter Guard Unpainted
Amerimax Home Products 6 in. x 36 in. Hinged Gutter Guard Unpainted-85280BX - The Home Depot

My drain grate is always clogged by tree leaves and small branches. In fact, the leaves go through the grate and clog the water pipe inside the grate. I thought I could eliminate the problem by covering it with metal mesh (i.e. gutter guard) so that leaves always stay on the surface.

Question> Does someone have any similar experience on this project? What is the best way to secure the mesh to the drain grate? So far, the only idea I have is to use zip tie.

Thank you

I would recommend zip ties.

You could also use hardware cloth for the drain protection. It comes on rolls and is easy to cut and bend. It's similar to chicken wire but has 1/4" square holes.
