How far a gutter should go off the roof?

Hi Tito,
The general recommendation is about 10 feet, however, the distance is related to the slope of the ground around your home, all the way to where that water will no longer be a concern. It would do no good to grain the roof 10 feet away if that water simply drained back towards the house.
On the other hand, if you have a really good slope, 3 or 4 feet might be fine.
The process starts with the landscaping. One of the difficulties some homes run into is the surface drainage may slope away from the house while the ledge or a layer of clay below the surface slopes back to the foundation.
Over time the disturbed soil next to the foundation will settle and create a drainage point for water right next to the area where you don't want it.

10' would be a little difficult . Very few homes here in Maine actually use gutters so I rarely deal with them. I'll let the others answer for you. But where that water goes is still important.

It's not so much where the gutter goes, as it is attached directly to the fascia board. The shingles are placed to where they run about an inch into the gutter space. Fill us in on your problem.

Can you post a picture of what you see? Gutters follow the fascia board. The roof may have been put on incorrectly, or the roofer over extended his roofing material. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...your-post.html
Yes we have had quite a bit of rain lately, especially up north.

Are you referring to the downspout? I've seen a few that just have a down turn without actually going all the way to the ground. The further the rain water is diverted from the house the better!

If PJ is correct, then one end should be pretty much up to the very edge of roof while the other end slops down. The opposite end may be as low as 2 to 3 inches depending on the length of gutter and roof. The other question is if he meant how far show the gutter extend from the end of a roof edge if it does not wrap around a corner.
