Nail placement on three tab shingles.

I recently got into a debate with some people on a you tube video about the proper placement for a nail (above, in, or below the tar line) of a shingle. I am curious to know what the concensous here is.

I know what the manufacturer says to do, and I agree with the manufacturer.

Remember, we are talking about proper placement, not what may be common practace.

Do what ever the manufacturer says to do, simple as that.

Now I have people saying in Louisiana it is code to nail above the tar line due to hurricanes. That seems very counter-productive to me. The reasoning given is to prevent wind driven rain from going into the nail holes. Any one care to comment on this supposed code?
