Water proofing a masonry planter.

I,m adding a new masonry planter for cherry tomatos on my patio, it going to have a drain.

What's the best way to waterproof. Would bituminous paint be bad for tomatoes?

Why, a simple plastic pot will work fine.

I'd coat it with foundation tar and then use a plastic liner.

Hot tar? I thought of that but its a giant mess. Couldn't I just use a solvent based asphalt paint?

I mixed a hydrophobic additive into the stucco/mortar that I dressed the bricks with and there is a slope down to the drain so it shouldn't ever be all that wet. I don't want to do up my head to much here about the water proofing. But I don't want to poison myself by way of the tomatoes either.

It still needs to cure for a few more days so there's no rush.

Foundation tar comes in 5 gallon buckets [maybe one gallon also] and is roller grade. As long as it is warm it applies ok [but messy] it can be difficult to apply if the tar is real cold.
Here is one example - Shop BLACK JACK 4.75-Gallon Fibered Waterproof Roof Sealant at Lowes.com
