Question

I was wondering if it is possible to put a preservative on 20 year old cedar shingles to extend their life?

Cedar shingles should have a normal life longer then 20 years. If they are going bad in 20 years they not be real cedar. They do make a cedar preservative available at most home improvement stores, but they may discolor your roof or ?.
