What is happening to my roof?

Why is the dark staining happening? The roof was replaced in 2005. It isn't leaking anywhere.

Is this just tar deciding to go one way rather than another?

Might also be a leak that is rotting the sheathing and you are seeing mold on the shingles as a result. But no way to know without being there and looking into it. Would be interested in seeing what the valley looks like above it.

Unfortunately I can't get up there to look.

It's not tar or some other material used when it was installed?

There would be no reason to use tar on that roof.

No, you don't use tar to install shingles. As Brant noted, it could be bad flashing in the valley causing an exposure to the wood below and the wood emits a discoloration onto the roof. Again, an upclose and personal inspection in that corner is needed.

you could try something like 'Wet and Forget' on it to see if it is a mold or mildew related stain... I use this stuff and it works OK, but follow the directions and it may take a while and a couple of applications to show improvement. I think it's fairly benign so it shouldn't affect anything else.
