Little free library project waterproofing
I'm making a little free library. Essentially a corner cabinet that I'm converting and setting on a post outside. It's an old cabinet with a hardwood front, stained, and the back of it is made of planks of wood, perhaps a 1X4 of some unknown material.
I intend to fill in all the cracks, etc, with silicone. How do I best weather/waterproof the cabinet. I'm going to put a tin roof to protect it.

The door will need flashing or roof overhang to keep the rain out. Any weatherstripping on the door frame? The stain will need a spar urethane to protect it from the weather [may need to be coated yearly] Forget the silicone caulk! you want a caulk that is paintable.

You can do it
Tightcoat-
I'm the world's worst carpenter, but I can paint. Look around town at your antique stores - you might find a suitable cabinet like I did. I didn't even expect to find anything, and in the first store I went to, I found 3 suitable cabinets. All I need to do is a little repair, and then finish it.
Try it, you can do it.
