Copper strip on roof ridge to minimize growth of algae

I have been told that if i attach a strip of copper to my roof ridges it will all but prepent the growth of algae. Firts of all, i would like to know if that is true, and if so, where can it be purchased and how is it attached?

As a test you can throw some pennies on the roof. You can use copper strip or copper wire. Whichever you can get.

Zinc strips work as well and are probably much cheaper. 50' x 3" roll is around $30.
