Furring Strips to Rafters

Good Afternoon,

I am re-roofing my home and want to attach 2x2 inch furring strips to my rafters (above the rafters, just below the sheathing) to make more room for ventilation. What would be the most secure way to attach them? Thank you for your input.
John

If you are using 2x2s, 3" torx screws every 12" and an impact driver would probably be best. They should likely be glued as well. With construction adhesive.

Raising the roof will require a lot of trim rework, especially if there are gables involved. What is presently between the rafters? Can you put in rigid foam baffles?

Thank you for taking the time to provide input, I have been busy and just say the responses today. In this area, there is an attic on one part and just fiberglass insulation on the other. we are having to replace the trim/fascia/sub-fascia anyway and I wanted to replace the 2x4 rafters with 2x6 toward the eaves in order to open up the vents to 6 inches. I have read that some people place furring strips horizontally across the rafters rather on top of the rafters, seems to me this would be more stable.

Thanks again,
John
