Ceiling Leak with Very Heavy Rain

Ceiling Leak with Very Heavy Rain
We had really heavy rain about a month ago and a ceiling leak happened close to the chimney. It has rained hard since then but there was no water leak.
This is on a hip roof, new shingles 18 years ago. There is a ridge vent in the center of the roof so is it possible the water got in that way?
I'd have to hire somebody to check this out, not sure who that would be.
Thanks.

More than likely that would be the job of a roofer.
It's hard to guess at the origin of a leak.
Usually you check the attic right after you get a leak to determine the location.

I have seen ridge vents leak many times so that is a possibility. Often it happens when there is wind from a certain direction so it is not consistent. But, the first step is to get up on the roof and inspect the area.

Chimney leaks can be due to cracks in the brick or mortar, or around the cap or flue. Then there could be missing shingles above the Chimney or a few missing ridge shingles. Looking in the attic might be once thing you could do if you can't get up on the roof yourself. But otherwise there is no way for us to know where the leak could be coming from, and you would need to hire someone to look into it.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I will have to get somebody to look it over.
It was really windy that night and I could see the rain coming down in "sheets".
That could always happen again.
