Do I tell my roofer to come back and fix this (see Pix)
I think the roofers did a good/decent job generally with the roof replacement this september however yesterday when I was winterizing the junction of the new roof skirting and the clapboards I discovered this. Six nails visible here I am not seeing this elsewhere.... and this area does not seem to be covered with the 3D shingles either....
Should I go back to the roofer?
Thank you!
(PS those are my actions to fill junction cracks w silicon and foam. I next plan on trimming and painting that intersection. )
Flashing should be used to seal the vertical wall/window transition to the roof instead of caulk & foam.
Did the roofers leave you shingles leftover from your new roof? If so it's a very simple matter to cut a shingle to size and glue in place with roofing tar. Or, you can call the roofers back to do it.
In addition to what Pilot Dane said, and maybe to state it more susinctly... there is likely already a metal wall flashing there. Assuming there is, what you did with the foam is pointless and only made a mess.
If there is NO metal flashing, then that is a problem that can only be corrected by actually installing a metal flashing. Foam or caulk doesn't cut it. You would likely need to remove shutters and siding to install that. And yes, that would be a job for your roofer.
And yes, there should have been one more row of shingles applied, because currently it is leaking at the top 5" of each butt joint..
Those are just the nails holding the shingle you can see. And a poor pattern / poor placement at that. Typical shoddy roofer style of work. Not all roofers are like that but too many are.
Yeah... I see the nails. I also see additional tar above and below the nails.
It looks like they had tried to glue pieces of shingle over the nails but they are no longer there.
Right. There's a piece on the top right corner of the photo that is still there, and it's not face nailed, just glued on with roof tar apparently. Real quality work.

I called the roofer and sent the two pictures. I told him about the exposed nails and the lack of flashing with the mating of the roof to the vertical clapboard. He said that this shingle blew off in the wind. He said he will remedy the missing section of shingle and he will look at the junction of the roof skirting and the clapboard. I will bring up the fact these top shingles are not face nailed. I will talk to him about leaking at the butt joints.
And no they did not leave me extra shingles which makes me realize I now need to buy a bundle of this exact shingle for the future.
Update:
The roofer yesterday came back and reinstalled the missing shingle He said that this small cut shingle had a 'hinged' or hinge-like top part that was face nailed into the roof. Once face nailed, the shingle was allowed to drop down and layed on the underlying shingle with some added adhesive. I pointed out that whatever he had done before was not sufficient to withstand windy conditions.
He said that he would return take out my awkward silicon and sprayfoam attempt at filling in the gap between the shingles and the clapboard and add flashing at the top, 3" up behind the clapboard and it would be angled and there would be 3" of flashing that would extend from behind the clapboard onto the top of the shingles. I told him it should be grey flashing to match the existing shingles.
Best,
Dave
This is the old picture where you can see where the cut shingle blew off.
The flashing should already be in place. Pretty hard to install it after the fact.
If your foam wasn't there..... you should be able to see the flashing.
Hi. Ever since the storms, my kitchen wall has had water dripping when raining from the corner where it joins to the beam that was put in for the kitchen extension.
The kitchen had a new membrane roof put on about 2 years ago so we don't think it's the roof and there's nothing above so we assume it must be coming in from outside not a plumbing leak.
Any clue where we start in trying to find our what's causing it. We cut a hole in the plasterboard enclosing the beam but couldn't really see much.
Any ideas so gratefully recieved!
Emma
