Roofing, UV Protectant for Wood Roof

Any hints on applying a UV protectant (possibly a CW Flood product) to my wood roof would be appreciated. Is it necessary? When should I do it, i.e. when the roof is how old? Should I do myself or hire a professional? Thanks.
