how many ashphalt shingles are needed for a spot 17'x6' replacing?

That's 102 sq. ft. A roofing "square" is 10" X 10" or 100 sq. ft.
There usually is about 10% waste in a roofing job.
Normal 3-tab shingles come three bundles to the square, although that can vary with the type and brand of shingle.
Buy four bundles of matching shingles, and you should be good to go (with some matching shingles left over to replace wind-blown damage later).
Replacement shingles almost never match exactly, so it's always a good idea to get extra when you're doing a roofing job.
