tin roof
#1
Hello and thank you,
I have a service porch that the previous owner
installed a tin or aluminus roof onto.
Under it is tar paper and beneath that looks like
1x6 pine. My question is can i renimove just the tin and lay down shingles to match the rest of the roof or do i need
to put down plywood and henrys and paper the whole thing again.
thank you, scott

The 1X6 is probably 3/4" thick T&G, and roofing nails are going to poke right through if you lay your shingles directly on it.
If the underneath "looks" (no nails protruding) matter to you, you may want to cover the 1X6s with a layer of 3/4" plywood over the old tar paper.
Nail the plywood to the joists, install drip edge directly to the plywood edges, put new roofing felt over that, and use shingle nails that are shorter than the 1.5-inch thick combined sheathing.
Use metal flashing with black plastic roofing cement under it to seal the porch roofing to the wall where it meets.
Good luck! Mike
