Gravel on Roof

I work in a shop that has a flat roof covered with gravel. I would like to know why it is covered with gravel. What purpose does it serve? Thank You

Cool

I'm not a roofing expert, but this type of flat roof usually consists of a layer of felt, a layer of flat metal, a layer of hot-melt tar, and the gravel.
I think that the gravel helps protect the tar from the sun, and helps hold it together.
(You know that all of those minute little granules on regular shingles are ground granite, so I guess this is similar in a way.)
